In the next period, one of the biggest priorities of the Ministry of Justice shall be to strengthen the capacity and the quality of the staff of the Public Prosecutorial Organisation – both the technical and professional staff – stated the Ministry of Justice, Nikola Selakovic at today’s conference “Dominant Directions of Criminal Legislature Development and other burning issues in the Serbian Judicial System“, which was organised in Kopaonik by the Association of Public Prosecutors and Deputy Public Prosecutors in cooperation with the Attorneys Association of Serbia.

Minister Selakovic stressed that in the previous period the Ministry of Justice paid great attention to the drafting of new judicial regulations which defined the new work organisation and the ways in which judicial organs were approaching the fight against organised crime and corruption, fight against domestic violence and, even, in the area of delinquent crimes.

On the other hand, Selakovic said that, in addition to having solid legislation defining the work of the judiciary, there had to be a qualitative and consistent application of the legislation. He explained that the introduction of new legislative solutions might even produce negative effects should they not be appropriately supported by strong staff and the professional knowledge of those who are supposed to be implementing those laws. “Efficiency and quality of each judiciary is largely dependent of the people making that judiciary”, stated the Minister and added that he was expecting that, in the upcoming period, the judicial system would be improved with 200 judges’ and prosecutors’ assistants.

“A qualitative criminal legislation and its effective application are indispensable conditions to meeting the criminal-judicial system’s purpose, and that way, the purpose of the society as a whole”, Selakovic concluded.
