The Serbian Public Prosecution will get for the first time a facility serving only for Public Prosecution needs, the Minister of Justice, Nikola Selaković said today on the occasion of opening of the construction works for the adaptation of the building, in which Basic Public Prosecutor’s and Higher Public Prosecutor’s Offices in Sombor will be found.

Selaković recalled that the building, constructed at the end of the 19th century, will be adapted an equipped in accordance with the latest work conditions, for the needs of the Public Prosecution organisation and implementation of the Public Prosecutor investigations. “Republic of Serbia will invest in this building around RSD 95 million for the performance of works, supervision and procurement of furniture and equipment for the Public Prosecutor’s offices“, Selaković said. Furthermore, he emphasized that the completion of construction works is expected to be in September when the building will be ready for moving in.

Selaković emphasized that he Ministry owes deep gratitude both to the former and current Sombor City Administration, which have understood and put at disposal the building which once was a school, for the needs of Public Prosecution in the City of Sombor.

The Mayor of the City of Sombor, Saša Todorović, highlighted that the new building adapted for the needs of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s and Higher Public Prosecutor’s Offices will increase the administrative importance of the City, which will also contribute to commercial and economic empowerment of the City of Sombor.

When asked about the prison system in Sombor, Selaković pointed out that the Ministry has made a great effort to enable the adaptation  and sanitation interventions of prisons in the whole country. “One of the most important results of the reform undertaken by the Ministry in the field of enforcement of criminal sanctions relates to strengthening of alternative sanctions“, Selaković said and recalled that Sombor was one of the first cities in Serbia which had a prison of open type. Furthermore, he stressed that the Ministry will consider, after a detailed cost analysis, the possibility of moving the Sombor prison form the centre of the City to the suburbs.

At the end , Selaković  emphasized that the Ministry of Justice will lay the foundation stone in April for the construction of a big District Prison in Pančevo, while the construction of the District Prison in Kragujevac will begin in autumn.
